Cockenzie Power Station Update

Following a detailed strategic review, ScottishPower has stated that the remaining operational hours permitted under European Law at Cockenzie Power Station are expected to expire by the end of March 2013. The station was opted out of the Large Combustion Plant Directive (LCPD) in January 2008 and as a consequence was required to close by December 2015 or after it had operated for 20,000 hours.

Following the major fire that was deliberately started by criminals near junction 25A of the M8 on Monday evening (7th November), causing considerable electricity supply problems, ScottishPower has confirmed that the substantial damage to two of its high voltage power cables will take more than a fortnight to fully repair. The company has warned that the electricity network in the Southside of Glasgow will be considerably weaker until the full repairs can be completed.

Iberdrola Renewables And Areva Form Strategic Partnership To Bid For French Offshore Wind Projects

Iberdrola Renewables and AREVA have signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly develop offshore wind projects in France following the government’s announcement of a plan to reach a 6 GW target by 2020. The partners will compete for two of the country’s five offshore zones offered in a first phase of bidding.

ScottishPower Renewables and DONG Energy have signed a turbine supply agreement with Siemens whereby Siemens will supply 108 machines of 3.6 MW capacity each for the 389 MW West of Duddon Sands offshore wind project, in the Irish Sea.

Methil Power Station No More

The 300ft chimney stack at Methil Power Station has been reduced to rubble today following a controlled explosive demolition. It marks the end of an association between the town of Methil and the coal slurry-fired power station that has been prominent in the East Fife skyline for nearly half a century.

ScottishPower Investigates Potential to develop Avon Power Station

ScottishPower is currently investigating the possibility of developing a high efficiency combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power station on the former Terra Nitrogen site in Severnside. The company is considering a station that will generate between 900MW to 1,200MW of electricity, which would be known as Avon Power Station.

SCOTTISHPOWER last night secured awards in four out of ten categories at the Scottish Business in the Community Awards 2011.
The company was highly commended in the Employee Volunteer of the Year category for its team volunteering work with a willow plantation project which enabled 200 children from 5 schools to learn new skills including coppicing, weaving and creating sculptures using a local renewable resource.

Methil Chimney Set For Explosive End

ScottishPower has confirmed that the 300ft chimney stack at the former Methil Power Station site in Fife is due to be demolished by explosive charge next month. The company has been undertaking a range of tests in recent months to determine the best method to remove the chimney and, after close consultation with experts and local Police, has opted for explosive demolition.
